SUFFOLK, VA. (WAVY) — Local leaders and organizers are canceling and delaying events set for this weekend ahead of inclement weather from the remnants of Ian.

Local events

Hampton

The following events in Hampton are either canceled or postponed:

  • The SLANDER show at Hampton Coliseum has been rescheduled to March 2023; learn more by visiting https://www.hamptoncoliseum.org/events/detail/slander-the-thrive-tour
  • The Crawlin’ Crab 5K on Saturday and half-marathon on Sunday have been canceled, as well as all the activities associated with them. Participants who had registered for the events will receive more information by email.
  • The inaugural Virginia Peninsula Community College Community Day 5K scheduled for Saturday along the Mattison Trail has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8.
  • The Buckroe Beach Farmers Market scheduled for Saturday had been canceled.
  • The James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach will close at 10 p.m. Thursday.
  • The Downtown Hampton Live concert event scheduled for Friday evening at Mill Point Park has been canceled. This was the final scheduled event in the series.
  • All youth football league games scheduled for Saturday have been canceled.

James City County

Freedom Stories scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Freedom Park in James City County is canceled. The event will not be rescheduled.

Newport News

The Newport News Fall Festival scheduled for this weekend is canceled.

Norfolk

The 33rd annual Virginia Children’s Festival scheduled for October 1 has been canceled. The festival will not be rescheduled and all ticketholders will be automatically refunded

Suffolk

In Suffolk, organizers have canceled the Suffolk Peanut Fest Parade previously scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1. The parade will not be rescheduled. Only the parade is canceled. The festival itself is scheduled for the following weekend, Oct. 6-9. The family-friendly event honors the city’s agricultural heritage and devotion to peanuts.

Virginia Beach

Sentara Beyond Cancer event: The Thomas A. Alberico, MD Lectureship event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center, has been postponed due to the weather. Tickets sold will be refunded. A new date has not yet been announced. 

Virginia Beach canceled Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend activities planned for Sept. 30-Oct. 2. There still will be some activities, including the International Sand sculpting Championship tent (Oct 3-Oct. 9). For more information, click here.

Yorktown

The Yorktown Wine Festival has been postponed to November 13. The county’s Skate, Rattle and Roll program is also canceled Friday night.

North Carolina

In the Outer Banks, National Park Service officials have postponed the 150th-anniversary event for the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Saturday’s event to celebrate the first lighting of the lighthouse is postponed due to the potential for heavy rainfall and flooding late this week. A new date and time for the event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ranger-led educational programs and Bodie Island Lighthouse climbing opportunities have also been canceled for Saturday.

Local closures

Busch Gardens Williamsburg announces they will be closed on Friday, September 30 due to inclement weather.

Slover Library in Norfolk will be closed on Saturday, October 1, to perform emergency maintenance due to the recent weather conditions.

Transportation

Hampton Roads Transit is suspending service for the Elizabeth River Ferry for Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. Normal service hours will resume Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022.

NCDOT officials have suspended operations for the Hatteras Inlet Ferry until further notice due to inclement weather.

As of 6:10 p.m. Friday, the Tide Light Rail is temporarily unable to provide service between Newtown Station and the Norfolk State University Station. Bus shuttles are being provided. Crews are removing a tree from the tracks.

VB Wave service will end at 10 p.m. Friday. Trolley service in Virginia Beach is being suspended two hours earlier than planned due to inclement weather.
