KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — A serious crash overnight on the Outer Banks left one woman with life-threatening injuries and led to another having to be extricated from her car.
It happened around 10:44 Wednesday night, Kill Devil Hills police say. Police say a 2020 Hyundai Tucson driving by a 60-year-old woman from Massachusetts was traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 158 at the intersection with Baum Street and rear ended a 2016 Toyota Rav4.
The Rav 4, driven by 58-year-old Gabriela Aurora Canov of Point Harbor, then went off the right side of the road and struck a Dominion Power pole, snapping it. Canova had to be extricated from the car, police say.
The 60-year-old woman meanwhile ran off the right side of the highway and struck a traffic signal pole at the northeast corner of the intersection, police say. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time and was thrown onto the passenger floorboard of the Hyundai.
The 60-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld by police until her family is notified, was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital and then Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police say alcohol impairment is suspected in the crash, but so far no charges have been announced.
The crash closed the roadway for about 3.5 hours. It reopened at 2:16 a.m.
