PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Make-A-Wish needs your help to make the dreams of local children come true. The organization told WAVY.com it is looking to add more wish granters to its current pool of volunteers in Hampton Roads.

Sydney Groves, a 10-year-old who lives in Portsmouth, just got back from her Wish Trip to Alaska with her family.

Sydney has cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas and other organs. She takes daily treatments to clear her lungs and keep her breathing properly.

She chose the Alaska trip through Make-A-Wish, because she says she loves Huskies. On her seven-day trip, she saw a number of animals, and even got to spend quality time at a dog sled camp.

“That’s the most Huskies I’ve ever seen in my life, and it was just wonderful,” Sydney said. “I can’t even describe it.”

Sydney came home from her trip with a number of stuffed animals and memories to last a lifetime. It’s something her parents are so grateful for.

“I never thought anything like this would happen for us,” said Russell Groves, Sydney’s father.

“It was just the most incredible experience to be able to say yes to everything,” said Kristi Groves, Sydney’s mother.

Sydney was excited to talk about her big trip to Alaska. She said even though she was cold, and her eyelashes froze, the views were amazing. She said it’s a trip she will never forget, and she is thankful for Make-A-Wish.

“I think it’s awesome and definitely whoever created Make-A-Wish is the best person ever,” Sydney said.

The volunteer coordinator for Make-A-Wish Hampton Roads told WAVY.com the organization is looking to add 22 additional volunteers to its current list of 21. Kristi Groves hopes you consider signing up.

“I would say, just do it,” Groves said. “The volunteering is so much fun. In fact, I am looking forward to volunteering eventually.”
