PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison after the brutal assault of his ex-girlfriend in July 2022, in which he threatened to kill her and her dog.

56-year-old Jerry Wayne Daisey, formerly of the 100 block of 66th Street in the North End, was sentenced on Monday, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced. The 36-year sentence handed down by Circuit Court Judge Steven C. Frucci was well above the maximum recommended sentence of six years and seven months, per Virginia sentencing guidelines.

It came just over six months after Daisey pleaded guilty in the case on charges of abduction, strangulation, assault and battery of a family member and statutory burglary.

The commonwealth’s attorney’s office says the assault began around 1 a.m. on the night of July 30, 2022 at the victim’s home, months after the pair broke up.

The victim said she locked all the doors to her home after Daisey rang her doorbell, but Daisey was able to get inside. He yelled “you will be dead before they get here,” when she tried to call police and was able to get into the bedroom.

He then grabbed her by the hair, punched her several times in the face and heads, and held her down on the bed against her will, prosecutors say. During the assault, the victim tried to break her bathroom window and tried to get her neighbors’ attention trying to push a shelf over.

Prosecutors say the victim was held at knifepoint by Daisey for several hours, during which he threatened to kill her and her dog, and at one point choked her until she passed out and urinated on herself.

Daisey eventually calmed down and left the house around 8 a.m., and was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant with a different shirt on, prosecutors say.

Police responded shortly after and found the victim with a broken nose, bruised ribs, petechiae of the eyes due to strangulation and numerous bruises.
