NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News has appointed the city’s first community violence prevention manager.

Synethia White was appointed to the role on Nov. 14 in the hopes of enhancing community safety and fostering a culture of peace.

White, who graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Human Services, has 20 years of experience in public service. White’s new role will have her overseeing and implementing comprehensive violence prevention strategies, collaborate with local organizations and engage with community members to create sustainable solutions.

“Mrs. White’s leadership and passion for community engagement make her the ideal candidate for this important position,” City Manager Alan K. Archer said. “We are confident that her innovative approach will help us create a safer Newport News for all residents.”

White also has previous experience within the city of Hampton, including Youth Violence Prevention Program Manager and Executive Director. White said she hopes to establish programs to empower youth, support families and provide resources for those impacted by violence.

“I am honored to take on this role and work alongside the residents of Newport News and community partners to create a safer community,” White said.
