NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police say three teenagers were sent to the hospital following a shooting Wednesday night in Newport News.

According to dispatch, the call for the shooting came in just before 9 p.m. in the 800 block of 26th St. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy outside with gunshot wounds.

Police say a third victim, another 15-year-old boy was found inside the home with gunshot wounds.

“It does not surprise me because we see it happen more often than we would like to see it, but it is disheartening,” said Adrian Cook of Let Our Voices Empower.

As of July 14, Newport News Police confirm there have been 45 non-lethal shooting incidents with 51 victims. There have been an additional 16 fatal shootings in Newport News year-to-date.

Of those victims, 14 were teenagers and four of them were killed.

Police say all three teenagers were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

No further information has been released at this time. 10 On Your Side is working to learn more about the shooting.

“See, from the outside looking in, people see a kid, or kids, teens, shooting at each other, or maybe having a beef,” Cook said, “but what I see is something more underlying. … The truth is they really don’t want it, but they don’t want to die either, so if the narrative is they would die, and they believe that, then they’re going to act accordingly to try to protect themselves, so now they’re living in fear and sometimes that fear is, I have to get you before you get me.”
