Correction: Police originally said Wilkins was 26, but later said she was 27.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 27-year-old woman died following an overnight shooting in Newport News.

According to police, they got the call for the shooting around 2:25 a.m. Sunday on Aqueduct Drive and Giovanni Court.

When they got to the scene, officers found a 27-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. She was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Community members tell 10 On Your Side the victim, identified on Monday as 27-year-old Evita Natasha Wilkins, was a mother of two children, and had her whole life ahead of her.

Rev. Eric “Duke” McCaskill from Police and Concerned Citizens Together (PACCT) said he wanted to show the family the community is here for them during this difficult time.

“Show some good. Some caring, we love you. And if there’s any type of dispute, let’s settle it by having open communication,” he said. “Practice these virtues of caring and compassion, forgiveness, detachment from the impulsive, maladaptive thinking pattern.”

Newport News Police haven’t released any suspect information at this time.

Police and community leaders plan to hold a CARE walk Monday at 4 p.m. to help the community come together and heal.
