NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two people suffered significant burn injuries after a boat fire near the James River Bridge Sunday morning.

According to the Newport News Fire Department, the six people onboard jumped into the water to escape the fire.

An off-duty Newport News firefighter, docking his boat at Huntington Marina, saw smoke and was able to rescue all of the people. 

It happened just before 10 a.m. Crews from Suffolk Fire & Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard also assisted with putting out the fire.

Photos from the scene show heavy flames and dark smoke billowing from the small boat.

The two people hospitalized with burn injuries are expected to survive. The boat has been towed to shore to determine a cause.
