Man dies after shooting, crash on I-664 in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man is dead after being shot Wednesday night on Interstate 664 southbound in Newport News, Virginia State Police said.

State Police said they got the call around 6:25 p.m. for a vehicle crash that took place on I-664 southbound at 39th Street, and when a trooper arrived, they found the driver of a 2008 Jeep Compass severely hurt. The 24-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesperson later clarified the driver was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, after initially saying there were two people.

Police say it appears someone fired through the passenger side of the vehicle, but they don’t have suspect information at this time.

This came after one person was injured after a shooting on I-664 southbound between Chestnut Avenue and Aberdeen Road overnight Wednesday.
