‘It’s frustrating’: NNPD tactical unit dispatched after hearing gunshots inside apartment

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police are investigating a shots-fired incident that began as a domestic disturbance.

Police rushed to the Newport Commons Apartments around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11.

The complex is on Turlington Road, off Warwick Blvd.

Police said officers heard loud music and voices inside an apartment, apparently from a Super Bowl watch party.

When the officers knocked on the door, one to two gunshots were fired from inside the apartment, though no one was hurt.

Police said the incident was escalated into a tactical situation and negotiators were called, and several people later left the home and were detained.

A police command center was stationed across the apartments near a bus stop on Warwick Boulevard, as officers blocked access to several apartment buildings during the investigation.

A resident who couldn’t get into his apartment said he called his wife to make sure she and their kids were OK.

“The well-being of the kids is the most important thing around here. So if there’s gunshots, then obviously this isn’t the place to stay,” he said. “This is frustrating.”

Police cleared the scene around 5 a.m.

In May 2023, the NNPD tactical unit was dispatched to the Newport Commons Apartments after a man shot someone and barricaded himself inside an apartment. The barricade lasted about 14 hours.
