NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man is in custody after having a standoff with police on Jefferson Avenue on Friday, during which shots were fired.

Tevin Brevard, 31, was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Other charges are pending, Newport News Police said.

Brevard currently has outstanding charges which include brandishing a firearm, assault, possession of a firearm, violation of bond conditions, and failing to appear.

Around 8:45 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 6100 block of Jefferson Avenue in reference to an armed subject, according to Newport News Police.

When officers arrived they saw an armed man, which resulted in a standoff between the man and officers, police said.

The man, police confirmed was suicidal, fired a gun and then pointed it in the direction of several officers, police said. At that point, two officers discharged their weapons.

Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is completed.

There were no injuries and the investigation remains ongoing.
