Correction: Newport News Police issued an update Monday evening about this investigation. They determined the victim in this case was not shot Saturday night, as was initially reported. His injury was from a previous incident, police learned.


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges after an incident in Newport News on Saturday, April 20, police said.

Police responded to the 100 block of Rivermont Drive around 10:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located a man they said was suffering from a non life-threatening gunshot wound. He declined treatment.

A preliminary investigation revealed two men who knew each other got into a verbal dispute nearby in the 0 block of Tilson Drive.

Officers took Angel Mario Juarez Lopez into custody at the scene and charged him with malicious wounding and related firearms charges.
