NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The City of Newport News held a celebration over the weekend to kick off its new Youth Career Program (YCP).
The pep rally-themed event took place on Saturday, June 22 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Denbigh Community Center. Newport News Councilwoman Tina Vick spoke at the event.
YCP will match over 100 youth with 50 business partners and non-profit organizations for summer employment opportunities. YCP is part of the Youth T.H.R.I.V.E. Initiative, which Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones announced back in May. The goal is to provide 16-24 year olds an opportunity to kickstart their career aspirations and provide them workforce skills.
The City of Newport News will cover $15 stipends for each participant, averaging 25 hours a week of work, according to the employee partner application.
