NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson will have a street named in his honor by the City of Newport News.
The city will add “Allen Iverson Way” to 16th street to celebrate the accomplishments of the peninsula native.
Iverson played in the NBA for 14 seasons at the shooting guard and point guard positions. In 1997, he was named NBA Rookie of the year and was an 11-time NBA All-Star.
“The community is beyond proud of Allen Iverson’s accomplishments and so thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate him right here in Newport News where he spent a lot of his childhood years living in Stuart Gardens,” said Newport News City Councilman John Eley. “Allen’s trailblazing career is a testament that when you dream big and think big anything is possible. We’re excited to celebrate him and name this street in his honor.”
Often regarded as one of the greatest scorers and ball handlers in NBA history, he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2001.
Iverson will join city leaders and the community for the official renaming ceremony.
The renaming ceremony will take place at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center on Tuesday March 5 at 10 a.m.
