NNPD: 1 man injured after crashing into police vehicle

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man is injured after crashing into a Newport News police vehicle, police said.

According to officials, just after 11:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard for reports of a crash involving a marked police unit and two additional vehicles.


An investigation revealed that, while an officer was running lights and sirens for service, a black Nissan struck the officers’ vehicle. The impact caused the police vehicle to hit a white Ford, police said.

The driver of the black Nissan, an adult male, was transferred to a local hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

All northbound and southbound lanes were closed on Jefferson Avenue while the NNPD Crash Team investigated the incident. All lanes have since reopened.
