NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Jan. 23 marked four years since a Newport News police officer was killed during a traffic stop after being dragged a block by a car.
Officer Katherine “Katie” Thyne was killed after pulling over Vernon Green on Jan. 23, 2020. Green took off, dragging Thyne for a block, before crashing into a tree, Thyne succumbed to her injuries. She was 24 years old when she was killed.
On the anniversary of her death, the Newport News Police Department posted:
“Today and every day, we remember the service and sacrifice of Officer Katie Thyne, who died in the line of duty on this day 2020.“
Thyne was a former Navy Sailor before joining the department in 2018 and graduating in June 2019. She remained a Navy reservist until her death.
Green was sentenced to 50 years in July 2023 for second-degree murder and hit-and-run.
