NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The Newport News Police Department announced it will continue hosting Vehicle Theft Prevention events.

According to Newport News police, 146 vehicles were serviced during the first Vehicle Theft Prevention event held several weeks ago.

The next available crime prevention event took place on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Newport News.

A second event scheduled for May, on the 19th, at the United Jewish Community Center was canceled due to the weather forecast. NNPD said it plans to reschedule it. Stay tuned.

While at the events, citizens will be able to have their vehicle identification numbers engraved on their catalytic converters and etched into their window glass. Hyundai owners will also be able to receive a free steering wheel lock.

Police will also go over anti-theft information, and free gun locks will be available upon request while supplies last.

Newport News residency is not required to attend, but vehicle registration is required.
