NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been charged with murder after a fatal shooting on 73rd Street Thursday night.
Police said the shooting happened in the 300 block of 73rd Street around 7:53 p.m.
Emergency communications received a report of gunshots in that area. Around that time, officers in the area saw a pickup truck fleeing the area of the shooting.
A short pursuit began, resulting in the pickup truck striking another truck at the intersection of 71st Street and Warwick Boulevard.
A male fled the pickup truck but was apprehended a short time later, police said. He was identified Friday as 28-year-old Cortez Bumphus, of the 800 block of Roam Court. He’s been charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The male who was shot on 73rd Street was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police have not shared his name, but said he was a 40-year-old Newport News man. The investigation is ongoing.
