NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is dead after a shooting on Bulkeley Place in the Hilton Village Townhomes community in Newport News Wednesday night.

“I feel bad because I don’t wish death upon nobody — never — not even my worst enemy,” said a neighbor who preferred not to give his name.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Antwone Vernell Ousley of Newport News.

Police got the call around 7:55 p.m. on Feb. 7 for a shooting in the 500 block of Bulkeley Place, and when officers arrived, they found a man outside suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and they are classifying the shooting as a homicide.

The neighbor said he heard several gunshots.

“If I recall, probably like eight or nine,” he said. “We just heard a bunch of noise coming through the alleyway over there.”

He said police quickly arrived. He’s lived there nearly a year, and said he has never experienced anything like this.

The community is just off Aberthaw and Tyler Avenues and not far from Main Street and Jefferson Avenue.

The neighbor said it’s a quiet area, and incidents like this are uncommon. He said several neighbors know each other on a first name basis, but he does not know the man who died.

Early in the investigation, Newport News detectives were at the scene and canvassed the area while the Newport News Police forensics unit processed the scene.

Police said they have no suspect information at this time.

According to police records, this makes the second homicide of the year for Newport News.
