School bus driver crashes into house in Newport News after colliding with another bus

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A school bus driver crashed into a house Thursday morning in Newport News after being struck by another school bus.

It happened around 8:34 a.m. in the area of 28th Street and Marshall Avenue, police say.

Police say there were no major injuries on either bus, one of which was carrying 11 children to Deer Park Elementary at the time.

The bus that was struck was still on the house’s porch/stoop when WAVY’s crew arrived, while the other bus was in the intersection with front-end damage.

This photo from the Newport News Fire Department shows the bus on the home’s stoop. There’s no apparent damage to the structure of the home.

The driver of the bus was cited for running a red light.

Residents who live at the intersection say they’ve seen their fair share of crashes.

“We have been here going on six years and in those six years we have seen 10 accidents at this intersection,” resident Doug Sanders said.

“This is terrible cause they’re speeding up and down, up and down.  Run red lights. Yellow lights,” resident Jamie Fagan added.

Felicia DeBrew says her family have had to start parking their cars on the yard instead of the street to avoid getting hit. Which has happened three times now.

“You know you get up in the morning and your car would be dented one night. We had a crash, and it was, my car had been hit and pushed over to the next yard.”

This is now the third case of a driver crashing into a building this week in Newport News. On Wednesday, a driver crashed into a Newport News daycare. No injuries were reported in that incident, but two people were hurt when a driver crashed into a Jefferson Avenue shopping center on Tuesday.
