UPDATE March 2, 2020: Michael Keller was found guilty of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and malicious assault charges on Feb 27. His sentencing is scheduled for May 1. His charges general district court were dropped.


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect is in custody after a Wednesday night shooting in Newport News left one man seriously injured.

Newport News Police said 36-year-old Michael Keller, of Hayes, was arrested at Signature Contracting LLC on Canon Boulevard after officers responded to a tactical situation.

Keller’s arrest came more than nine hours after officers were dispatched the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road — around two miles away — just before 11:30 p.m. 

Police said responding officers found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound. The man was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

Police said the shooter and the victim do not know each other.

Police and witnesses told 10 On Your Side a man and a woman were arguing in the parking lot when the victim tried to intervene and was shot. 

Witnesses who spoke with 10 On Your Side off-camera said the man was shot in the head.

A police spokesperson said officers identified Keller as a suspect following an investigation, and issued multiple felony warrants for his arrest.

Police charged Keller with malicious assault, discharging a firearm in a public place, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and reckless handling of a firearm.
