NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)– Officials are now calling an overnight fire in Norfolk suspicious.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to the report of a residential fire around 3:20 a.m. Monday in the 200 block of Ethel Avenue, near Lucile Avenue and Columbus Avenue.

When crews arrived on the scene, they located a fire in a crawl space. The fire was extinguished before it could spread into the home.

Battalion Chief Williams stated that the fire is still under investigation, and is suspicious.

Three people were home at the time of the fire. All occupants were examined and treated on scene smoke inhalation.

No injuries have been reported.

The displaced occupants are receiving help from the Red Cross.

Norfolk Battalion Chief Glen Williams confirmed there was another suspicious fire investigation at this same location last month. On April 4, around 8 a.m., there was a vehicle fire deemed suspicious in nature. The Norfolk Fire Marshal’s Office was called back to the 200 block of Ethel Ave. around 9:45 a.m. for another suspicious fire. The investigation led to the arrest of Lorenzo Wiggins on outstanding warrants for violation of a protective order, but no direct charges related to the fires.

All of the fires remain under investigation.
