NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at the Norfolk City Jail died Friday after suffering a medical emergency, the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office says.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were alerted around 2:44 a.m. by inmates in the cell block about Darryl Arnold’s condition. He was initially taken to the jail’s medical ward for treatment. The sheriff’s office says he was awake and alert at the time and speaking with medical personnel.
Arnold was later taken to the hospital at 4:44 a.m. and died around 10 a.m. Friday.
The sheriff’s office says the Norfolk Police Department is handling the death investigation, per state code, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
The sheriff’s office also said “as result of this event, the Health Department has issued an alert and taken steps to address potential medical concerns.” WAVY received multiple messages about inmates reportedly being sick with meningitis. A sheriff’s office spokesperson says there are no confirmed cases of meningitis at their facility.
