NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police say two men sustained non life-threatening injuries following a shooting on Granby Street in Norfolk on Wednesday afternoon.
According to dispatch, the call for the shooting came in at 4:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Granby Street.
Police say two men were sent to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Police said they were both in stable condition as of Wednesday night.
Police said initial investigation indicates the two men were crossing the street when a vehicle that was driving by started shooting. Police said that vehicle was a white Hyundai Genesis.
The car fled southbound on Granby Street before police arrived.
Police said two guns were recovered at the scene.
Police believe it was an isolated incident. A motive hadn’t yet been determined as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Tidewater Community College officials temporarily placed their Norfolk campus on lockdown as police investigated the shooting.
Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone released a statement after the shootings in an updated release Wednesday night.
“The Norfolk Police Department is committed to guarding the safety of those who live in and visit all areas of our City,” said Boone. “As recent events illustrate, no area of our city or in Hampton Roads is immune to gun violence. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. Hampton Roads has a problem with guns getting into the hands of those who have lost hope. I want to underscore these are not random shootings, but shootings committed by selfish individuals with no regard for the sanctity of life. We MUST come together as a community to address this very serious public health issue.”
Police said additional officers will be assigned to patrol the Granby Street corridor in an effort to prevent a repeated incident like Wednesday’s shooting.
Norfolk police will also continue to maintain a “highly visible police presence in the Downtown area” as social activities increase and the weather warms up.
There are no further details at this time.
Mayor Kenny Alexander also released a statement on Thursday in response to Wednesday’s shooting.
“Each instance of violence in our city should be cause for collective concern and should not be accepted in any community. This incident is under investigation by the Norfolk Police Department, and we look forward to its resolution. The City of Norfolk continues to work hard to mitigate violence, to help its victims heal, and address the factors that influence violence in our communities. This has included proactive engagement with our youth, providing employment services and skill development for young adults, and expanded community policing. Violence affects all of us, and we look forward to continuing to work with everyone to address it,” Alexander said.
