NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police say three people were injured following a Sunday night shooting in Norfolk.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim around 10:40 p.m. in the 1300 block of West 41st Street.

When they got to the scene, officers found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were sent to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

While police were investigating the shooting, a third victim, a man, walked into a local hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound.

The shooting happened about two blocks from Old Dominion University.

Students say they usually get an alert when a shooting happens near campus, but this time they didn’t.

ODU Police says their campus footprint reaches to West 43rd street on the South side of campus, so the shooting was outside the zone where they’d usually inform students.

Students who live near where the shooting took place say they still wish they would’ve heard from the university about it.

“I have so many friends that live like right down there,” said Senior Kelsy Smith. “It’s spring break so not many people are on campus anyways, but obviously some people are you know so it is kind of concerning that we didn’t hear anything about it.”

“I’m surprised because this area is so close to campus that we should’ve gotten one,” said Sophomore Gabrielle Byrne.

Byrne says the shooting isn’t surprising for the area, but it’s still unsettling.

“It just kind of sucks that like this is happening so close to us,” said Byrne. “We don’t really feel very safe.”

Although this happened in the vicinity of Old Dominion University, campus police confirmed the Norfolk Police Department is investigating this case.
