NORFOLK, Va. – A federal jury in Norfolk convicted a Chesapeake man Thursday on charges of credit union fraud and aggravated identity theft. Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, Adante Dupree, 25, conspired with others to buy stolen identities using the darkweb from victims in other states. The group then opened Navy Federal Credit Union accounts in their names.
Prosecutors said Dupee and the group paid a woman to pose as identify theft victims and pick up loan checks from the credit union and cash them at a Norfolk check cashing store.
Investigators said they caught the woman when she wore a wig to impersonate a victim much older than her real age while trying to cash a second auto loan check.
Dupree could spend up to 30 years in prison for the credit union fraud and more time for the aggravated identify theft. His sentencing is scheduled for September 19.
