NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — It’s not even football season yet and already the Berkley Timberwolves youth league in Norfolk has already suffered a great loss, as someone stole their trailer, riding lawnmower and weed eaters.
Coach Glen Yearling, who started the Timberwolves more than 20 years ago, said the equipment stolen is used to haul their football equipment and to operate the moving and landscaping business they started a few years ago.
“It’s easy for kids to to adapt to the bad things in the streets, but somebody’s got to show them the way,” Yearling said. “Somebody’s got to show them that there is more positive things. They can be anything they want to be. If they’re out there making their own money, they feel good about themselves, so they can help any parent that [needs] tennis shoes. They can help the parents buy their school clothes or whatever they want.”
Sunday morning, Yearling went to take his dog out and realized the trailer was no longer hooked to his van. He was supposed to pick up some players Monday for a big job.
“Just to break the news to them that somebody stole our stuff,” Yearling said. “They was hurt. They was hurt by that.”
A picture from a Ring camera shows a silver pickup truck around 1:40 a.m. Sunday taking the equipment from the 600 block of Fauquier Street. Police are investigating.
In the meantime, the thief has blocked the young players’ means to make their own money and sacked their sense of self-sufficiency and pride.
