NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A trash fire Friday evening on Wellman Street in Norfolk blew smoke onto Interstate 264 but did not cause any injuries, Norfolk Fire-Rescue said.
The fire was called in around 6:34 p.m. in the 100 block of Wellman Street, and Norfolk Fire-Rescue said its crews were able to keep it contained to the area where it started, and it did not advance any further.
It said there were no additional exposure issues, though the smoke blowing onto the interstate caused congestion on I-264 eastbound.
“This is an unfortunate common occurrence when dealing with trash piles,” Norfolk Fire-Rescue said. “Onsite excavators worked in unison with NFR units for mitigation.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
