Police identify man found dead with gunshot wound in Norfolk hotel room; suspect charged

UPDATE (1/28/22): Toone’s second-degree murder charge was certified to a grand jury on January 27, 2022. His use of a firearm charge was nolle prosequi.


NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating a homicide that left one man dead inside of a hotel room, near Lake Wright.


On Friday, police announced they charged 21-year-old Gary Toone Jr. with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the shooting death of 33-year-old Matthew Philbrick.

According to police, they received a call around 9:05 a.m. Thursday regarding the incident at the Quality Suites Lake Wright in the 1500 block of Premium Outlets Boulevard, near the Premium Outlets entrance.

They said a man, now identified as Philbrick, was found in a hotel room suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

10 On Your Side went to the scene and found a Norfolk officer outside room number 179.

A guest staying across the hall said she heard nothing.

A full eight hours later police were still on the scene investigating the homicide.

Toone is being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
