NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Damon Langley is climbing the ladder and making history.

After more than 20 years with Norfolk Fire-Rescue, Langley has assumed the role of fire marshal.

He is the first Black fire marshal in the department’s 150 year history.

“Being the first African-American Fire Marshal for the city of Norfolk, I’m really proud just to have this opportunity and to be in this position,” said Langley. “But I also understand that it comes with great responsibility. “For the kids in middle school and elementary school and high school that are like man you know what am I going to do? What other options do I have? It is important for them to have that representation.”

Langley began his career with the department in 2000 and has served in numerous roles over the years. The former nursing student says one of his mantras is to step outside your comfort zone.
