NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk International Airport said they are expecting more than 9,000 passengers to fly out Friday for the holiday weekend.

As of noon Friday, there were already some cancellations for the 4th of July weekend. 10 On Your Side’s Raven Payne was at ORF Friday afternoon and said one flight to Newark, N.J. and one flight to Washington D.C. have been cancelled.

As for arrivals, many of those flights are now coming into ORF earlier, with the exception of one. A flight set to arrive into Norfolk from Chicago was been delayed three hours.

Ashlyn Neavel, who was heading to North Carolina to visit her family for the weekend, said the airport has been quiet so far.

“I’ve been flying all night, so when I got to the airport at home it was pretty busier than I expected, but today here seems not as busy,” Neavel explained.

Another traveler, Angel Clark, was on her way home after vacationing in the Outer Banks.

She said the busy weekend has already affected her flight.

“So I got an email yesterday that said my flight is pretty full,” Clark said. “If I would like to postpone and go on another flight, they would put me on another one. However, that flight isn’t until Sunday,” Clark said.

Passenger Albert Mogol told 10 On Your Side how he felt after his flight was delayed.

“The flight will be delayed for an hour but it’s OK,” Mogol said. “It passes more time to relax and have my lunch of course.”

But it’s not only airline traffic that people will have to look out for during the holiday weekend throughout the DMV.

“Oh boy, right away maybe about 25 miles from Washington DC the traffic was heavy,” traveler Rhyss Hizon said. “On the way back here last night, there was heavy traffic all over (Interstate) 95 south and also (at) our own Hampton tunnel, we got delayed for 45 minutes.”

The airport is still advising passengers to arrive at least an hour and a half early to ORF to give them enough time to check in and get through security. They also remind travelers that you can reserve and pre-pay parking on their website.
