NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for stabbing and murdering two men in 2020, officials said.

36-year-old L.C. Grant III was convicted in a jury trial for the murder of 31-year-old Donta Antonio Jackson and pleaded guilty to the murder of 50-year-old Michael Dewayne Mizzell.

On Oct. 27, 2020, Grant and Jackson were driving in Jackson’s girlfriend’s car before parking outside a restaurant on N. Military Highway to have sex. Afterwards, Grant stabbed Jackson nine times, including a fatal 4-inch wound to the chest.

Jackson was able to go to a nearby business and inform them he was stabbed by a man who drove off in his girlfriend’s white Mitsubishi Mirage, a release states. Jackson died shortly after being taken to the hospital. Grant’s DNA was found on Jackson’s body, due to their sexual encounter.

Grant drove to visit the girl he was dating in Richmond the following day, and they were seen at a grocery store in Richmond. However, she said she broke up with him after he was acting odd, had unexplained cuts and was sleeping in an unfamiliar car.

Around the same time, Mizzell was reported missing in Norfolk. On Nov. 5, police did a wellness check on his and found him dead from more than two dozen stab wounds to the torso, neck and head. He was wrapped in linens in a closet. Grant was known to have lived with Mizzell and acted as a caretaker.

Grant’s DNA was found at Mizzell’s apartment and he had used Mizzell’s EBT card during his trip to Richmond after killing Jackson.

On Nov. 30, the jury found Grant guilty of the second-degree murder of Jackson as well as the use of a weapon in the commission of his murder and carjacking.

Grant was sentenced on March 8 to 40 years in prison.

On Thursday, March 21, Grant pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Mizzell. Grant was sentenced to an additional 40 years, however, it’ll be served at the same time as his prior sentencing.
