NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A stroll through the neighborhood with your dog at your side should be a time of peace, but a man doing just that in Ocean View ended up being shot Thursday night.
10 On Your Side spoke to people who live in the neighborhood and they said crime seems to be happening more in the area.
“It sounded like it was popping off all at once,” said Tiffany Satterfield.
Satterfield said her heart dropped when she heard gunshots from what she thought was right outside her window.
“I brought my little one to the kitchen because that was my first instinct. Take us to the kitchen, low down, because I didn’t know if there was maybe a bullet coming through the window,” Satterfield said.
Norfolk police found a 55-year old man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
“I was terrified. I really, really was because we hear gunshots around here a lot but never that close,” Satterfield said.
It’s not clear if the victim knew the gunman. The man told investigators he was walking his dog at the time.
A resident we spoke to didn’t want to be on camera but he said he recently moved to the neighborhood and was shocked to find out what happened.
“That’s scary because I walk around sometimes and now I’m thinking about that. You got to think about it twice,” he said.
“It’s normally at like 3 in the morning sometimes when you hear them, not at like 10 in the evening,” Satterfield said.
The shooting happened near a busy plaza and we’re told police were checking businesses for possible surveillance footage.
People said the area typically feels safe but after the shooting, they’re more on edge.
“We have really good neighbors. Everyone is great and looks out for another but then stuff like this happens,” Satterfield said.
