They arrived to find 20-year-old Dominique J. Brooks suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Brooks’ was a name WAVY’s sports department knew well after covering his high school years playing football.

The former Indian River High School quarterback and his team made history in 2018, beating Oscar Smith for the first time since 1998.

Before then, records show Brooks played for Oscar Smith’s football team.

In 2019, he would go on to make Norfolk State University’s roster but is not listed on the team’s latest roster.

10 On Your Side is working to learn why Brooks was in Norfolk the night he was killed.

Although it did not happen on campus, Old Dominion University sent out a notification Friday night around 9:30 p.m. alerting students about the incident. A map of the shooting from Norfolk Police shows the shooting happening near The Next at ODU.

According to their site, the apartment complex is privately owned and has no affiliation with ODU.

Local college students who heard the shooting tell 10 On Your Side they heard around six to seven gunshots at the time of the shooting.

“I was just hanging out and then I hear boom boom boom,” said Brian Ramquist.

The Old Dominion University student says he’s gotten used to the sound of gunshots, but this victim’s age has him feeling differently.

“Usually you hear these things happening to like older people, people you can’t relate to. You know he was a kid, just like us. Went to school, just like us,” Ramquist said.

Police have not released any suspect information.
