NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Norfolk Fire Department responded to a house fire on the 800 block Oak Ave. Friday morning.
Crews received the call at 4:26 a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. The fire was under control by 5:15 a.m.
One victim was transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Four adults have been displaced and the Red Cross has been called to assist.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though Norfolk-Fire Rescue told 10 On Your Side that the fire appears to have started in the back garage.
Pictures from Norfolk Fire-Rescue showed what was described as a hot burning fire that burned for a period of time before being discovered.
It burned the garage and burned into the home where three people were. All got out, but one was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Four people live in the house that is owned by 74-year-old Diane Baskerville.
A family member did not want to do an interview, but said everyone is OK tonight because Baskerville woke up everyone at 4:26 this morning to tell them the house is on fire.
“I’m not sure what time it was,” said neighbor Mike Kirchenstien. “My wife woke me up and told me, you know, that their house was on fire, and I came out and looked out the window. The flames were probably 15 to 20 feet above the roofline here.”
Again, the fire burned for so long that it’s possible Norfolk Fire-Rescue may never know what caused the fire.
One of those in the house was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and she was treated and released.
Kirchenstien is emotional with tears for them because Baskerville has been in that house a long time.
“And looking at the house, it must be a total loss,” Kirchenstien said.
But he’s also emotionally happy everyone got out alive.
“Just to know no one was lost,” Kirchenstien said. “Yes, that is what I am happy about. Yeah, I know it does not seem like it, but I’m just thinking what could have happened.”
