Operation Homefront to give out backpacks, school supplies to military children in Norfolk

Things every middle-schooler needs in their backpack for the 2023 school year

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The national nonprofit Operation Homefront is set to distribute backpacks filled with essential school supplies to military children on Saturday.

The 17th annual Back-to-School Brigade is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Norfolk Premium Outlets.

During the event, 360 pre-registered children of military families will receive backpacks and school supplies. Those who are interested are able to register by creating an account on My Operation Homefront.

According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, on average, families in Norfolk with two children require two adults to work full-time for at least $25 an hour in order to properly support themselves.

The Back-to-School Brigade hopes to ensure that military children have the supplies they need to succeed in the classroom, while also easing the financial burden parents in the military can face.
