NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man died Tuesday night after being shot in the Ocean View area of Norfolk.
Police tell 10 On Your Side they responded to a crash in the 200 block of W. Balview Avenue around 11:15 p.m.
“I heard two gunshots from whatever that direction that is, and then a car revving its engine and speeding by and a second later, it crashed into the car right in front of the house here,” said Joseph Witmer, who was visiting his son who lives on the street. He says his son tried to help the man, but it was too late.
Officials say they found 51-year-old Brian P. Austin, of Hampton, inside his car with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He died at the scene.
The initial investigation reveals that Austin was sitting in his car when he was shot.
He tried driving away, but hit a parked car.
“I heard a couple gunshots it sounded like. I mean I figured maybe somebody had a blowout, until I saw a car coming down the road,” said Bryan Greene, who lives on the street. “I’ve never been close to anything like that. It kind of shook.”
Norfolk Police are investigating his death as a murder.
