NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A water rescue was conducted after police in Norfolk say a man drove himself off a boat ramp Thursday afternoon.

According to police dispatch, the call for the incident came in around 5:20 p.m. in the 4600 block of Mayflower Road in Norfolk regarding a vehicle in the Lafayette River.

Police confirmed that the driver, a still-unidentified man, is not in distress following the incident.

A WAVY employee at the scene said emergency personnel attempted to convince the man to get out of the water by himself, but he would not cooperate, so they launched a boat and crews pulled him from the water at 5:50 p.m.

There was activity at the boat ramp for several more hours while they worked to remove the man’s submerged truck from the water.

A tow truck removed the vehicle around 8:30 p.m.
