UPDATE: WAVY confirmed Malik Fortes entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to three years, with all but one month suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation after his release.
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A gas station employee is providing new details tonight on an alleged abduction he says he witnessed.
The man behind the counter at the Shell Station on North Military Highway sensed something was wrong Wednesday afternoon, and he was right.
That’s when police say Malik Fortes, 26, walked in with Olivia Oliver, 24. The store employee told 10 On Your Side Oliver told him “I’m being held hostage” when she walked up to the counter to buy a bag of chips.
The employee, who didn’t want to go on camera, says Fortes then grabbed Oliver and took her against her will out to a pickup truck. Oliver was able to escape the truck, but only for a moment, and then Fortes put her back in the truck and sped off.
State police issued a critically missing adult alert, also known as an Ashanti Alert, but Norfolk police were already following leads and looking for a black Chevy Silverado pickup. They found it in the 1300 block of Kempsville Road in an area not far from Lake Taylor High School.
Officers got Oliver to safety and arrested Fortes. He’s charged with abduction, stalking and violating a protective order.
He declined 10 On Your Side’s request for an interview from jail, and Norfolk police are not releasing the store’s surveillance video as of yet.
