Homicide victim found in Norfolk identified as missing VB woman

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk Police confirmed the body of a woman found late Saturday night is a missing woman from Virginia Beach and her death has been ruled a homicide.

According to police, the call came in around 11:30 p.m. Saturday for officers to respond to the 1000 block of Galt Street, in the Olde Huntersville area off Tidewater Drive. A woman, identified as Marie D. Covington, 40, of Virginia Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene.


A spokesperson for Wawa confirmed with 10 On Your Side that Marie had been employed and was “a valued member” of the store team at the Holland Road location in Virginia Beach for more than six years.

As a result of their investigation, Norfolk detectives charged Gary Morton, 43, with second-degree murder and use of firearm.

Morton is currently being held in the Chesapeake City Jail without bond. Police have not released the motive or any other details surrounding the case.
