Pastor removed at VB church after parish member accused of sex abuse

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A pastor at a Virginia Beach Catholic church has been removed from his position after one of his parish members was accused of sexual abuse.

The Catholic Diocese of Richmond announced that Rob Cole is no longer with St. John the Apostle as of Wednesday, after the conclusion of an investigation.

“Bishop Barry C. Knestout expresses his sorrow and compassion to the victims and their families affected by this tragic situation and applauds the courage it took to come forward,” a statement from the diocese reads. “Bishop Knestout has determined that St. John the Apostle parish would benefit from new pastoral leadership.”

“Bishop Knestout appreciates Fr. Cole’s dedication and service as the pastor to this community for more than 15 years,” the statement goes on to say. “While this decision and transition will be difficult, the bishop appreciates the patience and support of the community.”

This development comes after a parent came forward in May and alleged that her 12-year-old daughter had been sexually abused by parishioner Vincent Jakawich when she was seven. Jakawich was later found dead in Currituck County, North Carolina, after those allegations emerged, with indications that he took his own life.

At this time, it isn’t clear if Cole will challenge his removal or whether he was reassigned. In the meantime, Fr. Esteban De Leon, V.F., the pastor of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, will continue to serve as St. John’s temporary administrator, the diocese said. A new pastor is expected to be assigned to St. John in the near future.

The Virginia Beach Police Department said its investigation into the claims made against Jakawich was “exceptionally cleared” due to the death of the accused.
