NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Mexican chain Plaza Azteca has closed its location on Granby Street in Downtown Norfolk.
The location at 411 Granby Street closed on Friday, August 16, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support and love you’ve shown us over the years,” the statement reads in part. “While this chapter comes to a close, we’re excited to continue serving you at our nearest Plaza Azteca location in Norfolk Outlets. We hope to see you there soon to enjoy all your favorite dishes, flavors, and warm hospitality!”
Plaza didn’t share why it was closing, but the news comes nearly a year after the chain agreed to pay more than $11.4 million in back wages and damages to more than 1,000 employees. A Department of Labor investigation found the chain failed to properly pay workers — paying predetermined amounts to back-of-the-house employees and not giving them overtime pay.
In addition to the Norfolk Outlets location, Plaza still has several restaurants open across Hampton Roads, Richmond and on the Outer Banks.
