NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two teenage boys were shot and killed Tuesday in Newport News, according to police.

The victims were 15 and 17, police said in an update Wednesday morning.

They say officers sent to the 4900 block of Rochester Court near 48th Street in the Meadow View Townhomes around 9:06 p.m. for a report of a shooting of two juvenile males.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, Newport News Police said, while the other died at a local hospital.

The shooting happened less than a mile away from Newsome Park Elementary School and Heritage High School.

One neighbor declined to show his face or reveal his name, but described what he saw at the scene.

“Mostly cops and some civilians walking, running towards the bodies,” he said. “Some were running away from it; I think just in chaos. I didn’t see the other one, I heard about the other one, but I’d seen one laying in front of the door.”

He said how surprising the shooting was, only living in the neighborhood for three weeks.

“A little shocked and made me a little uneasy,” he said. “I’ve only been out here for three weeks, so to move out here in the community and there’s already a shooting literally this close to my house? I can throw a baseball over there and you know that’s close.”

He said the shooting just means more danger for the area; one he told 10 On Your Side is filled with kids.

“I fear for the kids running around here cause there’s a lot of kids that play,” he said. “Where are you safe at other than being inside your home? You can put security cameras out. I’ve got a big dog. Nobody really comes to my house but even then, what can you do when bullets start flying and you get hit?”

Police have no suspect information to release at this time, and they ask that anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip via P3Tips.com.

10 On Your Side’s Michelle Wolf said there were at least 10 police vehicles at the scene on Tuesday night, and one of the parking lots at the scene was completely taped off. A K-9 officer was also at the scene.
