NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man faces a cruelty to children charge after a 3-year-old suffered a laceration near his eye as a gun discharged on Monday night, police say.
Norfolk dispatchers said that they got a call from a nurse at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters at 7:47 p.m. and said they had a mother walk in with a child who had accidentally shot himself in the 6600 block of Jefferson Court.
Though when officers arrived, they found the child was suffering from a minor laceration near the eye and determined he had not been injured by a bullet. The injury happened while the gun was being discharged, police say. The child was treated for the non life-threatening injury and is expected to recover.
Police have not shared additional information in the case, but said the incident happened in the Jefferson Court home around 6:30 p.m. and 21-year-old Daylon D. Jackson was charged with cruelty to children. He’s currently being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond, and also faces unrelated charges.
WAVY reached back out to Norfolk Police to ask who fired the gun. A police spokesperson responded, “Detectives have not released any further details regarding when the gun was fired, but it is not believed to be Mr. Jackson.”
