NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Police said a man has life-threatening injuries after he was found shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Calla Court.

The incident happened Wednesay at the Woodscape Apartments.

NNPD said the call for the shooting came in at 9:32 p.m. for the 500 block of Calla Court. Police said when officers arrived, they found a man in a parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

NNPD said he was taken to a local hospital with injuries considered to be life-threatening.

Two neighbors said they heard the gunshots.

“I was lying down watching TV and I heard three shots. Boom, boom, boom,” said Kevin Shupe. “And then I heard a car take off real fast.”

Another neighbor said she saw a man lying in the parking lot. She also said a resident who works in the medical field, and a resident who was an off-duty police officer aided the man until first responders arrived.

“It’s kind of scary. I was wondering if a bullet was going to come through my window,” said Shupe.

10 On Your Side’s KaMaria Braye spoke with a Newport News woman who jumped to action to help the man who was shot.

“There’s a black car backed into the office with a guy standing beside it at the driver’s door. And then I heard two more gunshots. And then you see the car tried to pull out, but I don’t think it was in gear.”

The woman, who works in the medical field and asked not to be identified, ran over to try and help the man.

“There were three other people trying to move the guy. And I’m just like, keeping them away. Don’t move the guy, you know, like, he can’t. Not until police got there. When police got there, you could see his head. He had gunshots in his head. He had one in his abdomen.”

According to the woman, the victim was still conscious, saying that his head hurt, when police arrived.

“This is a quiet neighborhood, you know? And for this to happen at my daughter’s bus stop, not cool.”

Police continue to investigate the incident.

According to the Gun Violence Archive this makes the 10th shooting in Newport News for 2024.
