NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Porch pirates are at work in Norfolk.

A man who spoke with 10 On Your Side said he became the latest victim when a thief walked right onto his property, helping himself with his deliveries.

“I was frustrated that there was nothing I could do when my son asked what do we do next? And I really had no real answer,” said Norfolk resident Kevin Bowden.

Bowden was shocked after his package was stolen in broad daylight off his porch last Thursday. He and his son were excited for the delivery, just for it to not be there.

“It contained some of [my son’s] back-to-school clothes,” Bowden said. “It was approximately $180 worth of pants and shirts.

Late afternoon, Bowden got a security alert to his phone.

“Another camera went off and recorded him taking the package right in front of the door, and he walked down the steps and walked down the street [and] appeared to be opening the packages as he was walking,” Bowden said.

Bowden said this may have been a minor setback, but there was still a lesson to be learned for his son.

“I would say he now understands that you can trust [only] so much and that there are outlets to try to recover your property,” Bowden said. “So, he does know that we were able to file the police report. And, in good faith, they actually were able to help us recover that money so that we can reorder the products.”

Bowden encourages his neighbors to be aware and to look into other secure package delivery options.
