PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police say a man was fatally shot early Sunday morning in Portsmouth.

Officers say they were called to the 20th block of Merrimac Drive around 12:10 a.m. Sunday regarding a man with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

When they got to the scene, officers and medics pronounced the man dead.

Officials identified the victim as 32-year-old Tony Lamont Deans.

Sunday night, family and friends set out a candlelight vigil at his house and the place where the shots went off.

Throughout the night, people came by to drop off some of his favorite things and leave prayers.

A friend of Deans spoke with 10 On Your Side’s Tamara Scott off camera. She said Deans was a good man who also worked to provide for his community.

The friend added this was not the way they were hoping to start off the new year.
