PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Mardi Gras Day, also known as Fat Tuesday, is celebrated on March 4 this year.

In celebration of the last day of the Carnival season, a Portsmouth based nonprofit is hosting a ‘Mardi Bras’ collection event.

The Help and Emergency Response, Inc., also known as the HER Shelter, provides resources to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking or human trafficking.

On March 4, the ‘Mardi Bras’ event will collect new bras, underwear, feminine hygiene products and textured hair care products from 2-6 p.m. at 1900 Columbus Avenue in Portsmouth.

If you are not able to drop off items, you can select an item from the HER Shelter’s amazon wish list. After your purchase, the item will automatically be sent to the shelter.

Mount Carmel Baptist Church will lead the collections event.

The shelter is also in need of cleaning supplies following budget cuts.
