PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police have charged a man with second-degree murder in an early Wednesday morning homicide in Portsmouth.
According to a tweet from the Portsmouth Police Department, the 911 call for the homicide came in around 3:40 a.m. near the 1000 block of Broad St. at the Economy Lodge. When officers arrived on the scene, they found an unresponsive man with injuries consistent with being shot, and medics pronounced the man, 52-year-old David Williams of Portsmouth, dead at the scene.
Portsmouth detectives identified Will R. Patterson Sr., 44, as a suspect responsible for Williams’ death, police said, and they secured warrants against him for second-degree murder, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Detectives with the Portsmouth Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit found Patterson Sr. and took him into custody without incident, police said, and Patterson is being held in the Portsmouth City Jail without bond.
Patterson Sr. is the father of Will R. Patterson Jr., according to an investigator. Patterson Jr. was sentenced last month to life in prison for attempting to kill a Portsmouth police officer.
