PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Portsmouth Service League, Inc., has named RADM Mark A. Hugel, USN, ret. the 2024 Portsmouth First Citizen.
Every year, the Portsmouth First Citizen award recognizes a member of the community who exemplifies citizenship by giving back to the community through donations and service. The tradition of the Portsmouth First Citizen award dates back to 1932.
According to the Portsmouth Service League, Admiral Hugel has served in several roles impacting the city of Portsmouth including: voluntary board member of the STARBASE Victory STEM program, member on the Portsmouth City Council and City Council Liaison to the Portsmouth Mayor’s Military Affairs Committee, and chairman of the Board of Directors at The Up Center.
For his service, Admiral Hugel will be honored on Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel, located at 425 Water Street in Portsmouth.
This event is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased here.
Proceeds from sales and donations will go to STARBASE Victory STEM Program, The Up Center, and the Portsmouth Service League.
